News

RRI seeks to design and launch a public awareness campaign—the Health of People and the Environment (HOPE) Project—that inspires both leaders and citizens to take action to restore the environment because their health depends on it. Read more ...

At the Resource Renewal Institute (RRI) we view sustainability through the lens of green planning. For us, the integration of environmental, social and economic dimensions requires a strong model of sustainability:

Economy Society Environment

Human society and the economic activity within it are totally constrained by the natural systems of our planet. The economy may expand or contract, and society’s expectations and values may change overtime, but to function in a sustainable way we must not exceed the capacity of the biosphere to absorb the effects of human activities.

Green Plans
Working strategies for a sustainable future

Green Plans are working models of sustainability in action. Countries around the world are proving that environmental sustainability and economic vitality are not mutually exclusive. Through a shared vision and cooperative effort among all sectors of society, these nations are demonstrating that a healthy environment, enhanced quality of life, and a vibrant economy not only can exist, they must coexist to remain viable over time.

Unlike conventional approaches that address environmental problems in isolation of each other, green plans treat the environment as it really exists—a single, interconnected ecosystem that can only be safeguarded for future generations through a systemic, long-range plan of action.

Our Strategy

Taking the lessons learned from green planning nations around the world, we catalyze the development and implementation of green plans through education, advocacy and analysis:

  • Read our Green Plan Primer to learn about green planning basics
  • Understand and become an advocate for our Green Plan Vision for the United States and the World
  • The roles and rewards of multi-sector collaboration in green planning are described in, What’s in it for me?
  • This website will be the pre-eminent source of up-to-date information on Green Plans In Action around the world
  • Contact us for more information about policy tours to green planning nations, further green planning materials—including new videos, articles, newsletters and presentations—and to find out what you can do to help.
