This is one of the 14 centers of the GRID program established by UNEP (United Nations Environment Program). The aim of the Global Resource Information Database is to help bridge the gap between the scientific study of processes occurring on the Earth and effective environmental management at national, regional and global levels. GRID-Warsaw is responsible for collecting, processing and providing information on environment in Poland and neighboring regions, cooperating closely with both global and European environmental institutions.

The project Information server of the Metropolitan Area Network WARMAN has been conducted at the Warsaw University Computer Centre since 1996 by the team of the Telematics Applications Division and the Computer Networks Division. Information resources, i.e. databases, clearing houses and WWW-services, are prepared in collaboration with about 50 scientific institutions and organizations. Some of these resources are held as our national contribution in large international enterprises.

The Polish Geological Institute was founded by the Polish Parliament in 1919. Since then the Institute has performed its duties as the national geological service.
